Over a period of time the jawbone where teeth were extracted thins out or "melts away." No amount of calcium from milk or health food store vitamins can stop this natural loss of bone.
This can often leave a condition in which there is a poor amount of bone suitable for placement of dental implants. In these situations, some patients are not candidates for dental implants without first growing new bone. Solutions can be suggested by Dr. Levy for this problem so you can successfully use implants which would otherwise be impossible.
Sometimes the addition of new tissue is necessary so "regular" dentures can fit better, even if dental implants are not used.
We now have the ability to grow bone where it is needed. This not only gives Dr. Levy the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, it also gives you a chance to have an improved bite, a nicer looking smile, and appearance. Dr. Levy may suggest bone grafting/addition procedures such as:
This procedure involves lifting the sinus membrane and placing bone graft material into the sinus floor, allowing implants to be placed in the back part of the upper jaw, if necessary. Remember, dental implants are like roots. Without enough bone around implants, they will not stand up to strong chewing.
For some of our denture patients, their jaw bone has been severely reabsorbed or "melted", and a bone graft is needed to increase the jaw height or width. Sometimes, all that is needed is the bone addition or grafting for improved denture fit. Some of our patients benefit by adding dental implants for their dentures to attach to, for more security in denture fit. Dr Levy will evaluate your individual situation and give recommendations.
For patients who want an implant placed where a bad tooth was extracted, bone grafting might be needed to build up the bone before implant surgery. Dr Levy will evaluate your particular situation and provide recommendations.
All of these surgeries can usually be performed in our office under general anesthesia or IV sedation. Post-operatively you will be kept comfortable with medication and antibiotics prescribed by Dr. Levy. Dr. Levy will advise you on home care to increase your comfort and speed your recovery.
